Does updating Nvidia drivers boost the performance of the graphics card?

Does Updating Your Graphics Card Driver Increase Performance?

The chances are that if you were to buy a graphics card the drivers it was supplied with would likely be out of date before you even installed them on your system. Yes, graphics card driver updates are one of the most common bits of maintenance you’ll ever have to do on your PC. Despite the regularity of these (and they are fairly regular), you are sometimes left to wonder exactly what you are benefiting from.

It’s always great to get a bit of extra performance for free and graphics card update drivers certainly present themselves as being in that category. The thing is though, is it true?

Well, we at eTeknix put this to the test by comparing launch drivers for the Sapphire AMD Radeon Pulse RX 570 GPU against the latest driver update!

We would like to thank Sapphire for providing us with the graphics card to conduct these tests with!

Upgrade the cooling (desktop only)

A good way to boost GPU performance is to install

A good way to boost GPU performance is to install an aftermarket cooler. This can be a heftier air cooler, or a more advanced liquid cooling solution, but it very much dependent on your graphics card, as some are compatible with aftermarket coolers and others aren’t. That is especially true of liquid cooling, where custom loops require bespoke waterblocks, which can be costly. Alternatively, you could attach an all-in-one cooler designed for a CPU using something like NZXT’s Kraken G12, but it’s quite an advanced process that should not be approached lightly.

Again, do your research before you begin, and note that you will likely void your GPU’s warranty if you remove the stock cooler.

Note: Some GPUs can have their cooling improved dramatically by tightening screws, adding washers, or replacing the stock thermal paste. This is very dependent on your GPU, right down to the specific version. So be very wary of making any changes you aren’t certain are safe and warranted.

Overclocking

One way to improve GPU performance is to overclock

One way to improve GPU performance is to overclock it. This is done by tweaking the frequency and voltage of the GPU core and its memory to squeeze out additional speed. If you’re not accustomed to overclocking components, proceed with caution and read widely and deeply before you begin. The wrong settings could potentially damage the chip. Even more, an inadequate cooler will cause the overclocked GPU to overheat and crash.

Like CPUs, you can overclock a GPU using desktop software. One solution is MSI’s Afterburner that scans your GPU and finds the highest, most stable overclock settings. Another is EVGA’s Precision X1 which supports GeForce RTX graphics cards, with GTX support ‘coming soon.’

For more help on overclocking your graphics card, check out our dedicated guide.

It’s worth noting that nearly all modern GPUs have a small amount of overclocking headroom built in. You don’t need to do anything for your GPU to reach its out-of-the-box peak performance, as long as you give the GPU proper power and cooling.

9) Background Processes

You should close all unnecessary apps, such as Chrome, Spotify, OneDrive. Also, if the Discord is idle, you should quit Discord.

Also, you can use the CCleaner to go through your startup and scheduled tasks and disable everything that you consider unnecessary.

Unigine Superposition

Similar to Firestrike, improvements were seen again, although these were not as strong in terms of comparative test results.

  • Unigine Superposition Extreme – 0.009% Improvement.
  • Unigine Superposition 4K Optimized – 0.008% Improvement.

Based on such close results, despite the updates drivers providing slightly higher results, we would say that in terms of Unigine testing it is inconclusive if any performance increase truly exists outside of the terms of a fair margin of error.

Manually update your graphics driver

If you’d rather hunt down driver updates yourself, you’ve got a few options. Several of the top graphics card manufacturers offer automatic driver updates, and most offer driver downloads directly from their websites.

In Windows, there are two ways to update your drivers on your own. The first is to use the built-in Windows Update service, which handles updates for your OS and various Microsoft programs, along with driver updates for a range of popular hardware. You can also take a more surgical approach through the Device Manager utility and update your drivers one by one.

Here, we’ll show you how to update your graphics driver in Windows 10 as well as how to update your graphics driver in Windows 7 with both of these tools.

Downloading from the GPU manufacturer

After identifying your graphics card, go to the manufacturer’s website and find the drivers section. NVIDIA and AMD both have buttons for drivers on their homepages. On Intel’s homepage, click Support to find links to their drivers.

On the drivers section of your manufacturer’s website, enter any requested information about your graphics card and you’ll be able to download the latest driver for it.

Using Windows Update

Windows Update is mostly used for OS and other Microsoft updates, but it can detect some types of outdated drivers as well. (Note that with Windows Update you can’t search for specific updates, such as a new graphics driver.)

Here’s how to use Windows Update to check for driver updates in Windows 10 and Windows 7.

Windows 10

  1. Open your Start menu and click the Settings cog.

Click Update & Security.
  2. Click Update & Security.

In the Windows Update section, click Check for U
  3. In the Windows Update section, click Check for Updates to see if there are any software updates available for your machine. If so, you can install them. If not, you’ll have to wait until a new update is ready.

Windows 7

  1. Open the Start menu and type windows update. Then, click Windows Update in the results.

Click Check for Updates and wait while Windows U
  2. Click Check for Updates and wait while Windows Update searches for available updates.

  3. Install any updates you find. It’s always recommended to update your software whenever possible.

Using Device Manager

Unlike Windows Update, the Device Manager tool lets you search for specific software updates — including a new graphics driver. Here’s how to use it to update your graphics driver in Windows 10 and 7 — the process is the same in both operating systems.

  1. Open the Windows menu and enter the phrase device manager. Open the Device Manager from the results. You can also type device manager directly into the Cortana search bar and find it that way.

Click Display adapters in the drop-down menu, ri
  2. Click Display adapters in the drop-down menu, right-click on your GPU, and select Properties.

Navigate to the Driver tab.
  3. Navigate to the Driver tab.

Click Update Driver, and then click Search autom
  4. Click Update Driver, and then click Search automatically for drivers.

If Windows finds an updated version of your driver, you can install it now. If not, it may mean that you already have the latest version of your driver, or that Windows was unable to find a newer one. You can search with Windows Update or directly on the manufacturer’s website to double-check.

Windows 10 Issue to Update Graphics Driver

If you are using Windows 10, then Windows automatically makes a list of the latest drivers then downloads and installs it for you. In the creator update of Windows 10, Microsoft is much stricter about driver update though previous OS versions like Windows 7 and 8 allow driver updates via Windows Update. All those update procedures occur automatically, and you need not do anything about this if and only if the automatic update turned off manually.

Sometimes “Windows update.” overwrites an available newer version over an older version though you install your hardware drivers from CD which came with the product. However, Windows 10 is intelligent enough not to overwrite the Graphics Drivers because overwriting may cause a new problem while gaming or Graphics related works. Windows 10 has a built-in driver update utility, so it is not necessary to worry about update the problem while you are running Windows 10 on your Personal computer.

Use the Control Panel of your Graphics Driver to check the version no which is installed now on your PC and you also can download the latest drivers from the panel. Manufactures like NVIDIA, AMD Radeon, and even Intel HD Graphics provide control panels that automatically test and check an option to download and install the most recent Graphics Driver for your PC. You only have to open the Graphics Control Panel whichever is on your laptop or personal computer.

The manufacturer’s website is the best source for downloading the latest Graphics Driver package for Graphics hardware. I will suggest you not to rely on the CD (Compact Disk) always which comes with the product. If you are a game lover and play High Definition games on your PC, then you should rely on the manufacturer’s website to update the Graphics software. In every update, they add new game compatibility and fixes errors in the previous version. After all, these updates are actually for those who play PC games.

Identifying Your Graphics Card

There are a number of ways to identify your computer’s graphics hardware, including built-in and third-party system information utilities. However, the easiest way is probably to just hit Start, type “System Information” into the search box, and then hit Enter.
