Styrofoam is water-resistant naturally. Usually, for mold to grow, moist conditions are necessary, and Styrofoam does not trap water. In only challenging situations, you will find mold growing on the Styrofoam’s surface.
This is because this insulating foam is naturally resistant to decay. There are also no organic materials in Styrofoam. These organic materials are usually food for mold and allow for it to grow. Because of their absence in Styrofoam, it’s unable to grow mold. Usually, natural disasters like floods affect the insulation of the Styrofoam.
Due to the weakening of the insulating system, it may develop mold, which can result from dirt like organic material building upon its surface or excessive moisture. To avoid this, you should ensure that the AC’s Styrofoam is not contaminated with water for a long time.
“Styrofoam?” What It Is and why Is It So Popular?
Material called styrofoam has been created in a research laboratory by the Dow Chemical Company in early 1940’s.
In fact the styrofoam is created from polystyrene that is made of petroleum-based plastic. While inventing this material many big cities including New York tried to prohibit manufacturing of this material because its components influence on the environment in a very bad way.
Frankly speaking styrofoam almost completely consists of air. Being made of the polystyrene with the numerous air gaps that are situated between the main components of material styrofoam is extremely light.
In fact all the secret of so high insulation level is in the fact that numerous air gaps (or you can call them pockets with air) can delay the fast spreading of the heat thereby creating the good insulation. Every usual cup made of plastic without any air gaps doesn’t prevent quickly spreading of the heat and that’s why you will almost immediately feel the temperature of your hot tea or coffee.
Such composition of material fully explains its cost. You don’t need a large amount of material, the small amount will be more than enough because the main point is to expand or “inflate” it as much as it is possible. The more air gaps will be in material the better it prevents spreading of a heat or cold. But the cons also exist in this technology. Because of such large number of air gaps the styrofoam is very easily breakable.
Because of the different styrofoam density not all coolers are the same. Some of them can hold a cold inside longer (more air gaps, low density), while some of them can hold it not so long (less air gaps, higher density). About all this features you can read in our next paragraph.
Step 4: Time to Cut the Lid
Take the lid of the cooler and place the fan on top of it. Make sure to place it so that the fan, if on, would be blowing down into the top of the cooler lid. Mark the lid with your marker pen to note the size of the fan in relation to the lid.
Now that you have an idea of where it will be, you need to duct tape of this part. Make sure to place the tape in strips covering everywhere your marked area would cover. We are doing this for 2 reasons. The first being that the duct tape will add a little structural support when we are making the cuts. Styrofoam is not the most robust of materials and can break off in unwanted ways 🙂 The second reason is that it’s helping to give the cuts a little better of an edge to work with, especially when we want to go seal the pieces when we put everything together.
Once you have the duct tape down, you need to place the fan once again and mark the lid with your marker pen to note the size of the fan in relation to the lid.
Now that you have the marking, put on your safety glasses and cut the lid. Remember to go nice and slow.
Once you have the opening, place the fan on it. If you need to trim up some cuts, go ahead and do so. Just be careful not to cut too much out. You want a nice snug fit for the fan to sit on and blow down into.

What is Styrofoam made of
