Capsaicin Does Not Actually Create “Heat” and Therefore Does Not “Cauterize a Wound”

The notion that the heat perceived by a human who experiences cayenne pepper in an open flesh wound could cauterize that wound is absurd. Capsaicin does not actually create heat, but rather it binds to a specific pain receptor in a way that mimics the sensation of pain and heat. Cauterization, the process of burning (or freezing) skin with metal or chemicals to stop bleeding and prevent infection, requires actual heat, cold, or specific acids that produce chemical burns, none of which is provided by cayenne pepper powder.

It is for related reasons that capsaicin has been investigated as a possible topical pain reliever. Several studies have shown the chemical is capable of reducing pain, likely through a process that involves depleting the chemicals responsible for sending pain signals after they are overstimulated. A reduction in pain, however, is significantly different than a reduction in bleeding.

How Much Cayenne Pepper to Take for Health Benefits?

There is no set dosage of capsaicin extracts to take for health benefits.

If you decide to take supplements, most manufacturers recommend around 1,000 mg per day. This is claimed to improve gastrointestinal health, help in losing weight, and lower blood pressure.

If you want to use cayenne pepper, you can try making your own cayenne pepper tea. Mix between 1/4 and 1/2 a teaspoon cayenne pepper in a glass of warm water. Drink 2 or 3 times a day for best results.

To improve the taste of cayenne pepper drinks, you could add a squeeze of lemon juice with 1/4 teaspoon of ginger powder to really boost the health benefits of cayenne powder water.

Insect and Snake Bites

How to Make a Cayenne Salve

  • 1 T. cayenne pepper powder
  • ½ cup olive oil
  • ½ cup castor oil
  • 3 T. beeswax

Put cayenne pepper, olive oil, and castor oil into a glass jar.

Allow it to sit for 1 – 2 weeks.

Using a sterile cheesecloth, strain out the cayenne pepper powder. Heat your red-colored oil in a double boiler with the beeswax until the wax melts. Pour into a jar or tin. Allow to cool.

You can use 1 cup of olive oil if you do not have castor oil; however, castor oil also has pain-relieving properties. If you want a harder salve, use 4 T. of beeswax.

  • According to Dr. Schulze, purchasing cayenne pepper in the spice section is usually not best. It can be old, burnt, or just not hot enough to be effective.
  • Purchasing cayenne in capsules is not the most effective way to take cayenne pepper. When you take cayenne in a glass of water, digestive juices are secreted to prepare your stomach for the cayenne. If you swallow a capsule, a few minutes later when the gelatin dissolves, you have surprised your stomach with about a half of a teaspoon of cayenne pepper.

  2. Pepper can cause skin allergy that’s why suggest to have a test before application.

  4. Before using cayenne pepper, consult a doctor for possible contraindications.

Cayenne pepper mask is not suitable for all people. Absence of contraindications doesn’t guarantee it can be effective. If regular application of cayenne pepper doesn’t lead to any changes then reconsider treatment and substitute product with some other. Try to avoid any hair straightener and blow dryer during cayenne pepper treatment.

Cayenne Pepper for Emergencies

Cayenne pepper will stop bleeding from a cut. Simply sprinkle cayenne into a clean wound and apply pressure with a clean cloth or gauze pad. The cayenne will mix with blood to form a scab. Don’t remove this scab. Allow it to fall off naturally, or you may begin bleeding again.

In his book Herbal Home Health Care, herbalist Dr. John Christopher writes about using cayenne pepper in case of a heart attack:

1 teaspoon in a cup of hot water.

Many midwives use this same formula for mothers who birth at home and experience bleeding.

Capsaicin as a Cardioprotective

Research has found that capsaicin, the heat-producing component in cayenne pepper, when applied topically during a heart attack, can significantly decrease cardiac cell death while further treatment is being pursued.

Capsaicin is also found in topical pain relief formulas.
